No Throttle Power E-Bike Troubleshooting

If your bike does not have throttle power, there are a few things that could be going on. Please note, this is if you do not have throttle, but pedal assist is still working. The problem parts could be:

  • Throttle
  • Wiring Harness
  • Controller

Again, we start at the source and work our way out. We know the battery turns on the bike, so that is not the issue. Next this brings us to the controller. As we do not have a way to test if that is the issue or not without swapping the whole thing, we move onto the next section, the wiring harness. We will need to check the continuity of the wiring harness to the throttle itself. First, unplug the throttle from the wiring harness. Here's a primer on how to remove and re-install the throttle on Tower eBikes:

Next, unplug the wiring harness from the controller. You will take your digital multimeter and set it to continuity (little triangle with waves coming from it). Next, take one probe end and put it into one of the holes on the wiring harness where it plugged into the throttle. Then use the other probe and start touching it to the opening on the other side of the wiring harness. You should eventually hear a beep at one of the connection ends. Repeat this for all of the openings on the wiring harness at the throttle end.

If you did not hear any beeps at any point of this process, then it is more than likely the wiring harness. If you get beeps at all of the connection ends, then we move onto the throttle.

Again, for the throttle, there are unfortunately not any tests we can run short of just plugging in a new functioning unit and seeing if it solves the problem. If it does not solve the problem, the culprit is more than likely the controller.
