Quill Stem
A quill stem is a type of bike stem that goes into a threaded fork. A bike fork is either threaded or threadless. Quill stems are heavier and often looked at as an older system stem. A threaded fork will have a set nut and a top nut. In order to attach a handlebar to that, you need some sort of a quill stem. A quill is a long protruding stem with a very long, usually six millimeter bolt that goes all the way through it. Quill stems are heavier and often looked at as an older system stem
When you tighten the bolt at the top of the quill stem, it forces these two 45 degrees together in a way that this secures the handlebars to the fork. So the other end of the quill stem is where you would put your handlebar through and bolt it to the stem itself. So it's very different than a threadless stem, but it's still it tends to be prominent in the bike industry due to its functionality.
Differences between a quill stem and a threadless stem?
A quill stem is actually the traditional stem and one of the oldest designs on a bike. The bolt that goes all the way through a quill stem is often very heavy, and bikes nowadays are attempting to get lighter and lighter. So if you can eliminate something that fills the steer tube and has the need for more hardware to hold for the fork be held to the frame and put just a large tube all the way through with lightweight spacers and a stem with a clamp. It's a much lighter system. Now that they've engineered it the way that they have, it's also a much stronger system. We're always trying to lighten our electric bikes and have since moved to a threadless stem, adjustable stem in our version 2 bikes.
