Park Tool Chain Cleaner

0 review(s)

The Park Tool chain cleaner is a device used to keep debris and grease from building up on your bike chain. It's kind of a clamshell design that locks over the chain and then you just rotate the cranks and it cleans the chain with a number of brushes and sponges and some solution inside the cleaner. The chain cleaner that we use is the part CM-25 along with the CB-4 solution. You should clean your chain pretty regularly, especially if you ride in dirty or sandy areas. Chains do tend to have quite a bit of dust and dirt build-up on them and then grime build-up from over-lubrication or just regular lubrication.

We also like to use Simple Green sometimes for the solution. Sometimes Simple Green dries a little quicker and a little bit cleaner so you’d only have to do a little bit less prep to get the chain ready. You should clean your chain pretty regularly, especially if you ride in dirty or sandy areas. Chains do tend to have quite a bit of dust and dirt build-up on them and then grime build-up from over-lubrication or just regular lubrication.

Why do you need to clean your bike chain?

If you don't clean your chain, you got a couple of things that will happen. You'll get dirt that builds up on the chain which prematurely wears out your gears and your cassette all while wearing out the chain itself. A lot of people put a little too much lubricant on their chain and that will also just gum up the drive train, gum up the derailleur, and gum up the gears. Dirt tends to be attracted to a lot of lubricants that people like to use on chains. Some lubricants are specifically designed to repel dirt, but the overwhelming majority of them attract dirt. So people put on a lubricant regularly, even every time they ride, and then they get a big build-up of goop and the chain doesn't shift correctly. So it's important to use a bike chain cleaner regularly.

It's also important to know when to clean your chain. Other than visually looking dirty, the bike chain could be making noise, which would mean it is not shifting correctly. After we ride our bikes in any sort of muddy or sandy environment we always clean the whole bike, including the chain, liberally with soap and water and then finish it off with the Park Tool chain cleaner afterward.

Does the Park Tool chain cleaner work on all bikes?

The Park Tool chain cleaner will work on just about any chain up to the point of some larger BMX chains, like a half-inch pin chain or light motorcycle chains. But just about any 6 through 11-speed standard chain should work, and some standard single-speed chains should work as well.
