Can I put an ebike on a car rack?


For the most part, electric bikes will fit on standard bike racks. There are exceptions to this however. Some electric bikes are fitted with extra wide tyres for off-terrain riding and some of these will be too wide to fit in a normal bicycle rack. If you are considering purchasing a car rack for your electric bike, be sure to know the width of your tires prior to investing in a rack in order to ensure that the rack can accommodate your ebike.


Another factor to consider before buying a car rack is the weight of an electric bike. With the additional weight of the electric components, battery and motor, e-bikes are significantly heavier than traditional bikes and may exceed the weight capacity of your rack. This may not be obvious initially but can cause the rack to unexpectedly fail while you are driving which could be highly dangerous to other road users. We suggest that you check out the manufacturer’s instructions before buying a rack for your e-bike. If your current rack has a weight limit that is below the weight of your electric bicycle, one way to avoid having to purchase a new rack would be to remove your battery before loading your ebike onto the rack. The battery is generally the heaviest component of the ebike and can often be removed, if you choose to go this route, be sure to check out the weight of the frame without the battery.


As electric bikes are significantly heavier than traditional bicycles, we suggest buying a rack that fits to the rear of your car. This will make loading your bike much easier and less dangerous. While it may be easier to lift your ebike onto the roof of your car, it can be easy to lose control while lowering it posing a danger to both yourself and others around you.


Loading your electric bike can be tricky due to its weight, weight distribution and non uniform shape. Lifting an electric bike that is too heavy may cause injury or damage to your bike or car. If you fell that your electric bike is too heavy to place on your car rack try lifting and securing the front wheel and then loading the rear wheel. Once the front wheel is secured, you will be able to lift the rear wheel a little easier as you will be able to pivot the rest of the bike around the front wheel and secure the rear wheel safely.
