When discussing how flat-resistant a bike is, bike tires get all of the love, but it’s really the bike inner tube and its tire liners that dictate how flat-resistant a bike truly is. Big name ebike companies notoriously will install fat tires on their ebikes to give the connotation that their bikes are more flat resistant. That really isn’t the case. Flat resistance is the collective responsibility of the of tire build itself, the tire liner protection (if any), and the strength of the bike inner tube. A lot of riders complain about flat tires when they can't find a visual explanation on why their tire has gone flat. The culprit, at least in most western U.S States, is a tiny thorn called a goat head. They are often invisible to the naked eye, and during many months of the year are littered everywhere on main roads and bike paths. One of our very own mechanics at our ebike repair shop said almost 50% of flat tire repairs we do here in San Diego are caused by goat head thorns.
